What this number is - and is not
This is a rough, indicative wall-face cost estimate for budgeting purposes only. It is not a quote, and it does not include excavation, drainage, engineering, council permit fees, difficult site access, or GST.
The formula
Wall face area (height x length, in square metres) is multiplied by an indicative installed rate per square metre for the selected material, then a +/-20-25% range is applied to reflect real quote variation.
Where the benchmark figures come from
Material rates are indicative Perth ranges drawn from published Perth retaining wall contractor cost guides (limestone and besser block $420-$680/m2, timber sleeper $150-$350/m2). A clean published installed rate for post and panel (twin-side) systems was not available at time of writing, so that figure is an estimate based on comparable precast/masonry systems - treat it as the least certain of the four.
Assumptions and exclusions
The calculator assumes standard site access, no unusual excavation (e.g. shallow rock), and a straightforward wall with no boundary or surcharge (an added load such as a driveway or pool sitting above the retained soil) complications. Where a wall retains more than 0.5m of ground, is on a boundary, or carries a surcharge load, a WA building permit and possibly an engineered design will generally apply and add to the total - see the Building and Energy WA website for the current permit position, or our engineered walls page for the detail.
